Panel: Energy security of Croatia and the region

Energy is one of the key components of economic competitiveness. Following the start of the war in Russia, and now with the introduction of secondary US sanctions, Croatia has become a key energy hub in this part of Europe. The LNG terminal plays a major role in this.

On the other hand, the development of artificial intelligence and the use of electric cars are increasing the demand for electricity, which requires investment in infrastructure, from power plants to transmission lines and charging stations.

More on everything at the panel.

Marica Balen Head of the Service for the Development of Geothermal Plants at the Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency, Bachelor of Science in Geology

Marica Balen, Head of the Service for the Development of Geothermal Plants at the Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency, Bachelor of Science in Geology.

She gained her extensive experience at INA in hydrocarbon exploration, moving from her early days in the field to leading exploration projects—from conception to realization, and from procurement processes through regulatory compliance to the actual drilling and testing of exploration wells.

Nowadays, as the world, and especially Europe, increasingly turns toward renewable energy sources, the opportunity to participate in a project as significant as geothermal energy exploration was not just a challenge, but a chance to apply her knowledge and experience to the development of this energy sector.

The realization of the geothermal energy exploration project for district heating purposes, financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NPOO), which greatly contributes to the energy transition in the Republic of Croatia, is one of the most important projects the Agency has realized over the past five years. The Agency and the Team have successfully completed four exploration geothermal wells in the areas of the cities of Velika Gorica, Zaprešić, Osijek, and Vinkovci, whose discovered geothermal potential is intended for district heating as well as for agricultural needs. The positive testing results, stable capacities, and satisfactory temperatures form the basis for continuing exploration and commercial production activities, serving as a tangible indicator that we possess the geothermal potential, knowledge, and expertise required to realize such high-risk, technically, and financially demanding projects.

Keynote speech: Global supply chains in the era of geoeconomic fragmentation

Artificial intelligence is shaping industries, while the very existence of industry depends on supply chains. In the global geopolitical game, the awareness of the domestic economy regarding these processes is of utmost importance.

These processes shape the price and availability of business inputs for almost every company—from raw materials and rare metals to machinery and software, everything today is a subject of the geopolitical game. Tariffs, subsidies, and national currency manipulation are back in fashion. Countries are using unique economic assets for geopolitical competition. This, naturally, reflects on entrepreneurial business operations and the economic climate.

Therefore, find out the current global situation and the possible consequences of the growing influence of artificial intelligence, as well as the shortening and relocation of supply chains, on the domestic economy.

Kristijan Kotarski, PhD Associate Professor at the Faculty of Political Science

Jedan od vodećih hrvatskih geopolitičkih stručnjaka s posebnim naglaskom na područje trgovine i logistike, izvanredni profesor na Fakultetu političkih znanosti.

Find out from foreign and domestic companies and institutions what is being worked on in Croatia in the fields of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and defense. Learn how these disruptive processes affect the shaping of everyday business and lives, and what the broader application of these technologies is.

Panel: Food security and the importance of local agriculture

Supply chain disruptions during the pandemic, the rise in fertilizer prices as a consequence of the energy crisis, natural disasters, and similar occurrences have already proven how easily risks in the domain of food security can materialize. At the same time, domestic agriculture suffers from inefficiency and an insufficient subsidy system, while significantly cheaper competition arrives through imports, resulting in declining agricultural production year after year.

How to approach these and other challenges and risks during current geopolitical tensions, as well as the importance of local agriculture, are some of the topics of this panel.

Panel: Diaspora - an untapped economic potential

Through several waves of emigration, approximately as many people have left Croatia as currently reside in it. Many of them or their descendants are today successful entrepreneurs and business people with specific knowledge, best practice examples, and significant capital. Many also have an emotional need to connect with their homeland, and some are ready to invest in Croatia or even move back. However, this potential still remains locked. The theme of this lecture is how to unlock that potential.
